Game Preview
The Brunswick High Pirates enter this game needing a win and some help to make the Class AAAAAA state playoffs which open next week.
The Pirates climbed to No. 34 in the Postseason Rankings after last week’s 56-42 victory over Effingham, giving them a shot to make the 32-team playoff field which will be set based on the final rankings.
BHS needs to move up at least two more spots in the rankings to earn a spot in the brackets, but a win alone doesn’t figure to get them into the field. The Pirates also will need teams around them in the rankings to lose and fall back in the pack, allowing them to finish among the top 32.
The Panthers have not won a game this season, so the Pirates are big favorites to win this one.
Brunswick’s offense will again go through its running backs, seniors Nigel Gardner and Josiah Gibbons who both ran for more than 200 yards last week in the win over Effingham. They became the first two BHS players to rush for more than 200 yards in the same game.
Gardner ran for 260 yards and two touchdowns while Gibbons carried for 220 yards and five touchdowns.
BHS also got a TD throw from senior quarterback Keygan Walker to senior wideout Isreal Henry in the victory.
The BHS defense was bolstered by the return of senior defensive back Ziyan Rankin who intercepted two passes. He had been sidelined with injury since the season opener against Camden County.
Friday’s game will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
