Research indicates that if a student has consistent, positive adult contact that improvement is noted in many areas of student development, including student achievement, self-esteem, motivation, and behavioral choices. The goal of the Glynn County Mentoring network is to establish positive adult role models who are willing to assist and help our ‘at-promise’ students gain the skills and confidence needed to have success now and to assume responsibility for their own futures.

Although mentors serve in many different capacities, there are basic qualities associated with a successful mentor: a sincere desire to be involved with a young person, respect for young people, flexibility, active listening, consistency, and empathy.

Program Mission: To enrich the educational experience of students 'at promise’ by giving them one-on-one support to improve self-esteem, confidence, and motivation for the student to work to his/her greatest potential.

Program Objectives: 

• To give support to students who need a consistent, positive adult role model
• To promote the value of education
• To improve student attendance
• To teach students to set and reach goals by improving their social skills, attitudes, attendance, behavior, and academic success

Commitment: 

• Attendance to mentor training, offered by the school district, is required.
• The mentor meets with the student mentee for 30 minutes to one hour a week for a minimum of 12 weeks.
• Meetings with mentees are held on the school ground during the regular school day

Target Population:

• Students in grades 2-12 who have been identified at their school for participation in the program
• Parent/guardian permission is required before a student can enter the program.
• Students placed in the program have agreed to participate.

Becoming a Mentor

Becoming a mentor requires attending a training session, completing an application, and a background check. Serving as a mentor also involves committing to spending 30 minutes weekly during school hours with a student for the school year and hopefully the following year.
