Work Session Highlights
During the August work session, the Board reviewed several key updates and action items, including:
Financials & District Operations
During the August 6 work session, the Board conducted a thorough review of district operations, student data, and program initiatives:

• Financial Reports: No monthly financial update was presented due to annual closeout. Reviewed the most recent Gude Report.
• Student Attendance: Reviewed attendance data for the 2025–26 school year, noting meaningful progress over the last four years, with district rates remaining 2.7% below the state average. Last year's rate was 0.9% lower than the 2024-25 school year.
• Title IV-B Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant: Reviewed the renewal of the 21st Century Grant (Year 3 of the 5 year cycle). This program was originally initiated in early 2010 by Board Member Susan Lee. It serves Altama Elementary, Burroughs-Molette Elementary, Goodyear Elementary, and all middle schools, providing one hour of academics and then transitioning into time of enrichment with dinner/snacks through the Boys & Girls Club. The program served an average of 340 to 400 students during the school year and 275 students during the summer.
• Technology: Reviewed a three-year contract renewal for Google Workspace for Education.
• Safety & Facilities: Reviewed the most recent Gude Report and plans for playground equipment replacement at Glyndale Elementary through KorKat.

Facilities & Construction Update
Progress continues on major E-SPLOST and district facility projects:

• Sterling Elementary: Roof replacement work is being conducted during evenings and weekends, with completion targeted for mid-September.
• Glyndale Replacement School: Construction is progressing on schedule, with framing and drywall work underway.
• Playground Equipment: Reviewed the plans for the playground equipment at Glyndale Elementary Replacement School.
• Goodyear Elementary: A massive shoutout and kudos go out to our dedicated staff for their dedication and impressive turnaround in getting everything set up and ready. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, with remaining punch-list items being handled during evenings and weekends.

Spotlights

• Statewide Drama Education Task Force: Brunswick High School Theatre Director Lucy Bryson represented Glynn County Schools on the Georgia Professional Standards Commission’s Drama Education Task Force. The panel adopted updated standards aligned with the National Association of Schools of Theatre, modernizing the statewide framework governing P-12 drama educator preparation and certification across Georgia.
• Georgia RISE Award Winner: Governor Brian Kemp and State School Superintendent Richard Woods awarded Mr. Shawn Morelan, Information Technology Director for Brunswick High School, as a 2025 Georgia RISE (Recognizing Inspirational School Employees) Award Winner. Mr. Morelan was selected as one of two statewide winners. 

Official Board Actions
Prior to the regular meeting on August 11, the Board held its 2nd Public Millage Rate Hearing.

During the regular meeting, the Board of Education formally approved the meeting agenda and the following consent agenda items:

The board also approved the Georgia Department of Education Mental Health Grant for ESE Telehealth for the FY27 fiscal year. In 2025–26, the program facilitated 1,109 student visits (a threefold increase over the 2024–25 school year), ensuring students receive critical mental health support directly on campus without having to leave school.
