“Handle with Care”

This summer, Family Connection of Glynn County had the privilege of partnering with the College of Coastal Georgia’s Nurse Camp to provide essential hygiene and laundry kits to students who have experienced trauma. The collaboration was part of our ongoing “Handle with Care” initiative, which helps ensure that children facing difficult situations at home receive extra care and support at school.
Handle with Care is a trauma-informed initiative where first responders notify school counselors when a child has experienced a distressing event such as domestic violence, a house fire, or other family emergencies. The notice does not share private details but serves as a signal to educators that the student may need patience, support, or just a little extra grace. Whether a child is withdrawn, acting out, or simply exhausted in class, this initiative helps schools recognize the signs and respond with empathy.
Through conversations with counselors and our lead social worker in Glynn County Schools, we learned that many students affected by trauma also lack access to basic hygiene supplies—things as simple as a toothbrush, soap, or clean clothes. That insight led us to begin assembling and distributing hygiene and laundry kits.
When CCGA’s Nurse Camp reached out about completing a service project, the partnership felt like a natural fit. Together, they were able to assemble kits that will directly support the needs of children in our schools. The students at Nurse Camp showed incredible enthusiasm and heart for this project, and it gave them a firsthand look at how their future in healthcare can also be a tool for compassion and community impact.
“The more hands, the lighter the load,” said Ashley Jackson, Executive Director of Family Connection of Glynn County. “This partnership with CCGA’s Nurse Camp made a real difference. We are always looking for ways to collaborate rather than reinvent the wheel, and this project showed how powerful partnerships can be when we come together to support our youth.”
We are proud to report that over 30 students participated in the summer Nurse Camp service project, and during the past school year, more than 150 hygiene kits were distributed through the Handle with Care initiative. We are excited to keep building on this work as we head into a new school year.
Family Connection of Glynn County is always accepting donations of hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, washcloths, detergent, and laundry cards. Your support helps ensure that children in our community feel clean, confident, and cared for.
