Game Preview
Brunswick High and Glynn Academy are set to renew their football rivalry Friday night at Glynn County Stadium.
The winner will claim this year’s City Championship trophy.
This will be the 83rd meeting between the Pirates and Red Terrors.
Brunswick has won the matchup the last two seasons. The Pirates can retire the current city championship trophy with a third consecutive victory Friday over the Terrors.
The Pirates last retired a city championship trophy in 2022 with their third straight win in the series. Glynn won the 2023 meeting to keep the Pirates from winning a fourth straight game.
Both teams share the record for the longest winning streak in the series which is six games.
Friday’s game is also a Region 1-AAAAAA contest for both local teams.
The Pirates and Terrors both had an off week last week as did each of the other six teams in the region.
Two weeks ago, both GA and BHS lost their region games. Glynn fell at home to Effingham while the Pirates lost in overtime at Bradwell Institute.
The Terrors enter this year’s rivalry matchup with a 2-4 overall record and a 1-2 region record. Glynn opened the season with a 49-22 loss at home to Calvary Day School before falling in Week 2 at Camden County, 42-13. Glynn picked up its first win in its third game, a 45-28 victory at home over Savannah Christian.
The Terrors lost their first region game at home to Bradwell Institute, 54-43 before winning their next league game at Lakeside-Evans by 44-10. GA fell to Effingham at home, 36-25, its last time out.
The Pirates opened their season with a 35-21 loss at home to Camden County before rolling over Groves 63-0 at home in the next game. BHS would lose to Grayson, 44-31, at home in its third and final non-region game.
Brunswick, the defending region champion, opened its league slate this year with a 38-14 win at Grovetown before winning its second region game against Greenbrier, 55-21, at home. The Pirates fell two weeks ago at Bradwell, 57-49 in overtime.
Glynn averages 32 points a game while allowing 36.5.
The Pirates are averaging 42.5 points per game while giving up 28.5.
The GA defense has been vulnerable to big plays and quick scores all season while the BHS defense has had its own troubles, especially with stopping the run.
The Terrors like to control the ball and the clock with their option-based offense, but have turned the ball over on their first possession in each of their first three region games, with each opponent scoring immediate points off those turnovers.
Glynn, which relies heavily on the run, committed five turnovers in the loss to Effingham two weeks ago.
Glynn’s top play-makers on offense are junior quarterback Max Noonan, junior running back Caiden Robinson and senior athlete Ja’kori Roman. Glynn offensive lineman Grant Ferrell, a junior, is a college prospect.
The Pirates have big-play ability on their offense which features senior running backs Josiah Gibbons and Nigel Gardner who have combined for 1,559 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns on the ground thus far this season.
In the loss to Bradwell, Gardner ran for a school-record 363 yards on 25 carries.
Gardner is committed to Miami (Ohio) while Gibbons is committed to Georgia Southern.
Receivers Waseem Murray and Isreal Henry also have big-play ability for Brunswick while senior quarterback Keygan Walker, the starter for the first time this season, has thrown for 1,014 yards and 12 touchdodwns through the first six games.
Glynn’s defense is led by senior linebacker Cooper Reiss and junior lineman Zamir Bell.
Standouts for the BHS defense include linebackers Antwan Thomas, Braylen Johnson and Trent Lee.
Glynn has a weapon in senior kicker-punter Patrick Coyle who booted a school-record 54-yard field goal in the game against Effingham.
Braxton Davis, the kicker and punter for the Pirates, is also having a solid season.
