The Brunswick High Pirates prevailed Friday night in their Region 1-AAAAAA opener as they won 38-14 over Grovetown in Augusta.

 

The defending region champions, the Pirates were playing on the road for the first time since their preseason scrimmage at Ware County prior to the start of the regular season.

 

Brunswick improved to 2-2 with the win in their first season under head coach Byron Slack. The Pirates opened the 2026 campaign with three straight home games, falling to Camden County before routing Groves and losing last week to Grayson.

 

BHS started slowly Friday night, fumbling away two punts by the home team in the opening quarter. Grovetown would take a 7-0 lead on the Pirates in the opening quarter before the Pirates woke up and reeled off the next 31 points.

 

Brunswick tied the score at 7-7 in the second quarter on an 18-yard run by senior running back Josiah Gibbons.

 

The Pirates would take their first lead before halftime on an 18-yard pass from Keygan Walker to Gibbons that put the Pirates in front 14-7 at intermission.

 

Brunswick quickly pushed its lead to 24-7 at the outset of the third quarter with points on their opening two series of the second half. Walker threw his second TD pass of the game and the Pirates also kicked a field goal.

 

The Pirates extended their advantage to 31-7 early in the final quarter on another touchdown pass by Walker.

 

The Warriors (0-4) finally got on the scoreboard again to make it 31-14 before Gibbons went into the end zone on a 33-yard run late in the game for his third score of the night.

 

The Pirates will be back at home next Friday for their second league game against Greenbrier, another Augusta school. Greenbrier (1-3) lost its region opener Friday night 28-21 at South Effingham.
