Game Preview

 

The Pirates and Rebels will face off for the first time since the 2013 season when Brunswick won 46-0 at Glynn County Stadium.

 

Brunswick has won the last three in the series, but the Rebels still hold the all-time lead against the Pirates.

 

These two teams used to meet in region action back when Brunswick still competed in a league that included several Savannah schools.

 

The Rebels have fallen on hard times since their last meeting with the Pirates. Their last winning season came in 2014 when they finished 6-4.

 

Groves hasn’t had a season in which they won more than two games since that 2014 campaign.

 

Last year, the Rebels did not win a game. Their closest game was a 35-26 loss to Johnson.

 

They opened this year with a 36-24 loss to Islands at home in Garden City.

 

The Pirates also lost their opener last week to Camden County, falling 35-21 at home. The game started as scheduled last Friday, but was suspended by lightning early in the second quarter. The rest of the game was finished Saturday morning.

 

The Pirates and Wildcats were tied 14-all at halftime, but Brunswick never led in the second half. BHS trailed 28-21 and was driving for a potential game-tying score when it lost a fumble inside Camden territory.

 

The Wildcats turned the turnover into a touchdown to stretch their lead to double-digits. Camden led by the final 14-point margin when it got the ball after a Brunswick punt with nine minutes to play in the game. The Wildcats kept the ball until the final horn and actually kneeled down twice inside the Brunswick 5-yard line in the final seconds.

The Pirates could not get the Wildcats off the field on third down and that cost them the game. Camden finished with 368 yards including 212 on the ground.

 

BHS gained 287 yards. A bright spot for the Pirates on offense was senior quarterback Keygan Walker who passed for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Friday’s game will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
