TOTY Spotlight: Wendy Mitchell

Throughout the month of October, we will be introducing you to the 2023-2024 Glynn County Teachers of the Year.

Wendy Mitchell was named Teacher of the Year at FACES/Leaps & Bounds. She has taught for 37 years in a variety of positions, grades and states, beginning with three-year-olds up to fourth grade. In fact, she taught in public schools, private schools and for a couple of different HeadStart programs in Rhode Island, Connecticut, South Carolina, and now Georgia. However, she has spent the last seven years teaching pre-K at FACES. Here are some awesome things you should know.

Family: I have been married to a wonderful man and husband for the last 37 years, Keith Mitchell. We have three beautiful adult girls, two of them are teachers today and our oldest daughter is Teacher of Year for Glyndale Elementary this year, Stephanie Dixon. We have nine wonderful grandchildren.

Who is your role model? I had the privilege of working with a wonderful woman, Ms. Monica, that was a role model to me as well as a great friend. She was a woman of great faith and character that showed compassion and love to all her students as well as their families. She made it her mission to have her students prepared for the next grade they were to enter as well as to be prepared for life itself.

What book has most influenced you? The Bible.

What is your greatest teaching memory? There are many moments in teaching that come to mind but I love to see the little faces light up with a smile and they say “I did it”  when they achieve something that was very difficult for them like writing their name by themselves, opening a bag of chips, or even putting a straw in a juice pouch.

What is your favorite quote or personal motto? “I can do ALL things through Christ which strengthens me.”  Philippians 4:13
What is a fact about you that most people don't know? I would have loved to have been a race car driver.

Any hidden talents or hobbies? I love to garden, cross stitch, bake, decorate my house for Christmas and other holidays, walk, go to the beach,  and most importantly spend time with my family.
