TOTY Spotlight: Chas Bumgardner

Throughout the month of October and November, we will be introducing you to the 2023-2024 Glynn County Teachers of the Year.

Chas Bumgardner was named Teacher of the Year at Glynn Academy and is one of five finalists in the running for the Glynn County Teacher of the Year. He has taught AP United States Government and Politics at GA. He is also the head coach for the GCSS swim team, where he coaches swimmers from all four middle school and both high schools.

Family: My family is from Glynn County. My mother, Vickie Bumgardner, has been a Glynn County Educator for 38 years and is still teaching. I got married in June 2022 to Haley Bumgardner, who is also a Glynn County Educator. We have an adorable Goldendoodle named Bentley.

Who is your role model? All the educators that contributed to my education when I was a student that currently work at Glynn Academy - Paige Rivera, Josh Veal, Jesse Knowles (also was a groomsman in our wedding), Kelly Galland, Jeff Parker, Dona Barrow and Rebecca Addison. They have all helped inspire me to be a teacher in Glynn County.
 
What book has most influenced you? The Harry Potter series. I feel like I grew up alongside all the characters.

What is your greatest teaching memory? Seeing my students succeed every year.

What is your favorite quote or personal motto? Anything Winston Churchill ever said. 
 
What is a fact about you that most people don't know? I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was in the 11th Grade at Glynn Academy. 
 
Any hidden talents or hobbies? I love cooking, fishing and the beach.
