The Glynn County School Counseling Department will provide a comprehensive academic, career, and social/personal program leading to graduation and further life successes for all students.
Glynn County Schools' Counseling department continues to work diligently to align the counseling and guidance program to the American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model. The ASCA National Standards reflect the expectations for all students to achieve.A comprehensive school counseling program is an integral component of the school’s academic mission. Comprehensive school counseling programs, driven by student data and based on standards in academic, career and social/emotional development, promote and enhance the learning process for all students. The ASCA National Model:
- ensures equitable access to a rigorous education for all students
- identifies the knowledge and skills all students will acquire as a result of the K-12 comprehensive school counseling program
- is delivered to all students in a systematic fashion
- is based on data-driven decision making
- is provided by a state-credentialed school counselor
School counselors provide direct services to students, which are in-person interactions between the student and the school counselor. These interactions include the following:
- School Counseling Core Curriculum: structured lessons or activities that are designed to promote skills, knowledge and attitudes in academic achievement, career development, and personal/social growth.
- Individual Student Planning: opportunities/activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and future career plans, which are typically done in small group or individual advisement.
- Responsive Services: activities that meet student individual immediate needs and concerns, to include individual and small group counseling, crisis counseling, referrals or resources available in the community.
- System Support: activities designed to enhance the school counseling program and support of the school. System support activities include professional learning and development, consultation, collaboration and program management.
- Management of Counseling Program – Incorporating the organizational processes and tools that are concrete and clearly delineated and reflective of the students’ needs for college and career readiness.
- Accountability – School counselors demonstrate the effectiveness of the school counseling program in measurable data based decisions by reporting on immediate, intermediate, and long range-range results showing how students have benefited from guidance and counseling programs.
- 1. Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on current school data and thus ensures effective school counselor practice.
- 2. Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the school wide integration of the guidance curriculum.
- 3. Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, personal, social, and career plans for academic achievement and college and career readiness.
- 4. Interprets and utilizes student data and uses appropriate assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group student needs for prevention strategies.
- 5. Implements an effective referral and follow up process.
- 6. Conducts a yearly program audit to review extent of program effectiveness and implementation.
- 7. Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and assist to assist with appropriate interventions to comply with the College and Career Readiness Performance Index.
