hello this is Brittany Tate with the GCF Prime cast on the pr specialist here for Glynn County Schools we are here to talk about his first 100 days on the job and just kind of pick his brain about where we're headed in the future so coming in we are faced with these the unprecedented challenge of covid-19 what were your expectations before coming when is superintendent in heaven is a really surprised you in your new role where do I knew we were going to have to be dealing with covid-19 but as as an incoming superintendent I wanted to build on my strengths and rely on my strengths and I think my strength is Edge is instruction and improving the instruction of the of the schools that I've been in and I thought I feel like I can help improve the instruction of the system as a whole quarter we've had to deal with covid-19 and that's been getting more political I'm afraid and I so ugly being a superintendent of a school system is is way more political than I thought it would be I'm starting to learn how to job with the politics of Education so what's the first thing you did to kind of establish yourself as a leader coming into this district has a new superintendent and how did you distance yourself from your role as a high school principal High School Brussels one of the first things that I always try to do is under in the job said everyone else had who is responsible for what so I kind of took that with me until the very first thing I did was start developing an organizational chart and organizational chart of the organizational chart if you click on someone's name play the duties and responsibilities of a responsible for several purposes it helps me see what everyone's doing and it helps that also keep from overlapping responsibilities which I think is a waste of human resources and then finally we can use those the pieces of the organizational chart when we start evaluating folks and start looking to to hire Replacements of people who leave for one of reason or another what are some of your goals for this school year and do you believe you are director conference them first and foremost my goal is to finish the school year offering face-to-face instruction semester will be over 90% of our students will be face-to-face I think it will always offer the virtual off option and I think that men wear on go realtrac 202 to finish the school year certainly we're also on track to get our students back and we always have some some sort of a virtue option for students who for one reason or other just simply can't come to face-to-face instruction conversations with staff families in some of our stakeholders and how do you plan to use the information so you know what is the Moon closer to those cuz you started the stated earlier been there for a while and so this and that Community but when you become a superintendent of a school system you're dealing with not only the community as a whole but individual pods within each school so I'm dealing with 10 different elementary schools and their communities I'm dealing with different middle schools in their communities in in two different high schools in their community so you got understand from each Community comes from different viewpoints different things that they think are important and so when you start those little small pods within the school system so I think that how to how do I plan to use that information to help me I think I probably need to do more with talking with stakeholders and being involved in community groups and listening to all the stakeholders in our school system not just the parents not just a student but also the Business Leaders and community members who pay taxes for students to come to school here so take into account everyone's ideas and then building upon our vision so academically speaking where are we is it show me where do you hope to see us over the course of the school year CA ccrpi was was high but with Kobe we're going to see some real season problems here we're going to see our test scores drop our graduation rates are going to take a tumble in both high schools dropping 5 to 10 percentage points and so I think our school system right now we're going to see some issues when we will have our ccrpi scores at the end of your bed I think everyone in the state and everyone in the nation's going to see that we have to look at ourselves not only where we were but where we are in comparison to other school systems you know if we're in the skin in the same as long as Effingham then after this year we still in that same enchiladas are we still doing with him is because we're dealing with the same issues so are we on par with them and we got students not doing what they're supposed to be doing virtually home because they're scared to come to school and you know who am I to tell them that they have to come to school so looking forward to 20 21 what are your goals for not only the school system but also for yourself we got to catch up we've got to we've got to take the students where they are when they return to face-to-face and we've got to catch them up and try to get them back to work where they worked into a fight a student who has a senior in only needs a few credits Buena student when code is student decided that they were going to go get a job making $15 an hour and they're perfectly happy with this child doesn't see what's going to happen 10 years from now when they're probably working the same job making that same 15 to $20 an hour or so we've got to get these be back in school and get them own path to graduate and then as soon as her behind we've got to catch them up and catch them up with their classmates so they can graduate on time and our ultimate goal of course it to create productive citizens from our graduates what were there any other thoughts about what you plan to do in the next 100 days other than getting our students back on tar covid spreading right now we see a small up to what's happening and from talking to the Department Public Health they see a large uptick coming and if that happens you know we may be looking at a situation where we have to go completely virtual of course if we do that that's even more and so at some point in time we're going to come out of this book when we do come out of this we need to have the infrastructure in place here in our school system to come out of his strong when I went to Jane Macon middle school in the fall of 2010 Jane Macon Middle School was on the needs Improvement list Jane Macon Middle School in terms of test scores the last place in Glenn County of the four middle schools we may be in last place when we come out of covid but in three or four years we're going to be back on top where we deserve to be if you have any advice for parents who have kids at home who are learning Learning Works willing to help kind of help them and catching back on par with the students in class during the school day just like their classmates are when the face-to-face don't wait until the afternoon to try to do all the work at one time sit through the classes Listen to What do teachers have to say and then parents make sure your students are logging on make sure students are doing what they're supposed to be doing check the check the assignment page and make sure they're turning there's a sign check Infinite Campus and make sure check your email and make sure teachers are here if they're here Thirty but we need our parents to help us out into monitor What's happen because when the kids are in school we've got adults monitoring him unfortunately sometimes when the kids are home no one's monitoring them and I know what I would have been like as a 12 or 13 year old student so I can only imagine what some of our children are going through it also so any call to action for some how many members who kind of want to step in and help these parents who are struggling to get there as soon as back onto virtual some ideas there and December 8th board meeting order enough Chromebooks gray suit in Glenn County have one not quite that doesn't mean everybody's going to get one to take home every day but if we do have to close down then we wouldn't be able to provide every student with a Chromebook and so those students and hopefully we'll get those Chromebooks in soon and so those students home and may be struggling to to get online or to follow follow their with their work assignments to get a Chromebook from the school system and use it and so we just ask the parents to be patient let's get these orders in and and and be ready to help your children with their work anybody have questions about in person in Virtual learning should they contact their principal or their school counselor who should who should they talk to about those issues especially at the elementary level at the middle school I want to talk to the principal of the school counselor the same thing with her at the high school level you either want to talk to the DES Child counselor at the school registrar for the school principal at work just bring it back to a planaria what are some things you like to do to decompress quite a bit when I when I get home as I was walking 15000 steps a day as a superintendent I don't get that many steps in Fort Smith I'm sitting in a lot of meetings a lot of luncheons and I so I try to I try to walk at least during what time of the day either the morning or the afternoon I do like to ride my golf cart around the neighborhood and speak to my neighbors of course I'd love to fish and love to play golf and then I just enjoy spending time with my also saw you looking forward to the holidays then that was all I had for you if you want to ever catch up to
