Golden Isles College and Career Academy Secures $150,000 Grant for EV Integration
The Golden Isles College and Career Academy (GICCA) has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Education to enhance its Engineering Program with electric vehicle (EV) technology. This funding will be used to purchase two Switch EV kits, each valued at $75,000.
The Switch EV, as described by Switch Vehicles Inc., is designed for assembly, testing, driving, and disassembly, allowing repeated use by successive classes. Powered by a 96-volt lithium-ion battery, the Switch boasts 108 horsepower, can reach speeds up to 85 mph, and has a range of 40 miles on a single charge. The grant also includes a comprehensive curriculum where students will study the EV industry, learn about EV components, and assemble the vehicles within a semester.
Contrary to expectations, this new curriculum will be part of the Engineering Pathway rather than the Automotive Pathway. GICCA revamped its Engineering Pathway three years ago under the leadership of Greg Smith, focusing primarily on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in manufacturing. The new EV curriculum will complement this training, offering students diverse career opportunities.

Beyond debris removal, the program educates students on plastic consumption and introduces creative ways to reduce plastic use and waste, recycle and upcycle plastics, and lessen their impact on the marine ecosystem.
